te amo tanto pero eres tan difícil

te amo tanto pero eres tan difícil

i love you so much but you are so difficult

In this intimately charged exploration of a complex mother-daughter relationship, a young woman navigates the delicate balance between love, resentment, and inherited trauma as she grapples with the legacy of her family’s intergenerational conflict and the unspoken truths that bind them, all framed against archival footage of a poignant road trip marking her first return to the Dominican Republic in over a decade.

This film was screened a work-in-progress opening the 2024 edition of Third Horizon Film Festival at the Perez Art Museum Miami.

The story of what I’ve learned about my mother, our mothers, the motherland, and myself. The painful tribulations and mesmerizing spells that arrive from generational traumas, immigrant family dynamics, and the promise of a better life.

This film is an ongoing work, testimony, and archival that mirrors the hunger for connection we hold for one another and ourselves. We aimed to develop this work as a continuation of a 2019 road trip taken through Quisqueya but now as we expand within space and time.

This work is funded by the Forward Fellowship Grant.

This story starts after ten years of undocumentation prevented me from leaving the U.S.
